Inquirer: Your true nature simply isn’t “knowable” in the way that you mean here. That’s kinda the whole “point”. Knowing something means “having a satisfying set of concepts”, in usual parlance.
There appears to be “someone who knows”. That’s what we look for in inquiry. The “point” of the looking is that it is only an appearance. You look and look and look AND LOOK, and you never can find “the one that knows”.
What do you find? The unknowable. That about which no concept can be made, because the concepts are made out of it.
You can’t think your way out of this. It’s ALL about looking. If there is a single concept you might hold onto, it’s this. “You can’t know it. If you know it, that’s not it.” Neti Neti.
When you want to know the truth “what is true” is not the right question to discover it. The right question is “who, exactly, right now, wants to know?”
Who? Who now? Who hears the thoughts about this? Why can’t you find them? There MUST be a knower if there is a known right! It’s baked into your every moment, isn’t it?
Why the hell can’t you find the knower? Isn’t that the true mystery?
The Reason You Can’t Find the Knower
James If you know you exist and that you are conscious…which you do…you know you are your “true nature” because you are existence shining as unborn consciousness. But this is incomplete knowledge; a few more facts remain: you are whole and complete and unborn; nothing is lacking and you are immortal. You are also more than an appearance; you are always present because you are changeless.
When “you” look and don’t find anyone that knows, you fail to appreciate that the one that is looking is what knows. If you weren’t present, you would know that there was no one who knows. You can’t unlook because looking is your nature. If you can’t look, you can’t unlook either.
I am NOT a who
It’s a mystery that you think you are a “who.” The “who” that looks isn’t a who either. It is a What. It is completely impersonal existence shining as whole and complete bliss-full consciousness. So yes, the question is What is seeing right now. Also yes, the only knower is ‘baked in’ as you point out. You can’t find the knower because you are the knower. The mystery is that you can’t find it when you are it.
The knower is not an object of perception. The mind and the senses have no access to it. If you identify with your means of knowledge, it is always a mystery. So there is only one solution: have your ignorance about your nature erased by a teacher wielding a proven means of Self knowleldge.
Perfect Satisfaction
This is where thoughts and thinking come in. Self knowledge removes Self ignorance. This is the whole purpose of Vedanta. It works.
