The Wages of Sin

Dear James,

Perhaps you would like to share my story for the benefit of other lazy people.

The Parable of Tamasina

Once there was a woman named Tamasina.  Because she always got more or less everything she wanted, and everything more or less worked out in her favor, she was not very attentive.  You see, she owned a perfect tiny golden MacBook computer and she used that thing day and night for three years.  It traveled with her to India, Europe and Canada.  In fact, all of her precious documents and photographs from near and far were contained in that computer.  And almost every day while she was writing an email or watching a show, a little sign would pop up in the corner of the screen saying “Your computer has not been backed up in x number of days.  Would you like to back it up now?”  And always without hesitation she would click on “Not now, remind me tomorrow”.  And she did this for years.  I might add that she had put off getting a surge protector to liaise between the computer and the wall socket in her old Victorian house apartment with its ancient electrical wiring. One evening in the middle of a show, there was a gentle popping sound, the smell of burning plastic and a black screen.  Tomasina took the computer to the repair shop fully expecting that her luck would hold and it would just be a minor issue.  But Lo and behold, the entire circuit board and battery casing were burnt to a crisp. The bill for the diagnostic was $150, the computer was destroyed and the data was lost forever.  Even though Tomasina knew full well that as the Self she is free from the gunas, it made no difference. Because she did not manage her tamas, the powers that be finally delivered the appropriate result.

Love,

Sally
