Questioner: So, James, in line with our discussion about karma yoga, you referred yesterday to the second half of karma yoga. I thought it was only loving God, taking what God gives with gratitude. Please explain.
James: Karma yoga is right attitude and right action. If the attitude is correct but the actions aren’t, it doesn’t work. Isvara wants to see the color of your money. It’s a negotiation. During the Cold War the Russians said they would reduce their nuclear arsenal and asked the Americans to trust them. The Americans said, “We trust you, no doubt, but we need to verify.” People say, “See, Isvara, I give you my devotion, now let’s see you fix up my situation.” Isvara’s probably an American; he wants to see you managing your gunas before He gives results. The problem is that His idea of the proper result is not always the same as the devotee’s. But if you do the actions Isvara suggests you will get the results that Isvara promises. It’s a straightforward transaction.
