Description
Self Knowledge (Atma Bodha) by Sri Sankaracharya is a basic Vedanta text of 65 verses unfold by James. It is written for ‘those who are purified and peaceful, calm of mind and desirous of liberation.’ In a simple elegant style with apt metaphors and elegant examples it makes the point that enlightenment is only attained by self knowledge because action by a limited entity cannot produce a limitless result i.e. freedom. It recommends the ‘constant practice of knowledge’ i.e. taking a stand in your nature as awareness, not in the incomplete ego. It explains superimpostion, the confusion between the self and the ‘not-self’ that causes suffering. it carefully unfolds the three bodies teaching that allows you, limitless awareness, to separate yourself from the objects appearing in you. It was a favorite text of my teacher, Swami Chinmayananda and the first text that I commented on.
