As announced in our  previous Newsletter, we have introduced a new two pronged method to our online teaching, with the intention of facilitating the assimilation of Vedanta.  We will teach one format where Ramji and I, as well as on occasion other Shiningworld teachers, will impart the non-dual teachings in a more technical, scriptural format, as we usually do.  The other approach will be for all the Shiningworld teachers to join in to help inquirers, whether beginners or advanced, with issues pertaining to the jiva identity, i.e., duality, or mithya. As John and Lisa Baxter are both psychologists, their professional knowledge will be of great help in this regard. 

Though non-duality has no real connection to duality, the reason most inquirers get stuck at all stages of self-inquiry is usually linked to psychological issues, which impacts on or is impacted by lack of qualifications and correct values. This is in many ways, the most important part of teaching. But it is also the most difficult because egos can get in the way. It’s much easier to just teach the Self – but unfortunately, there is no way to get to that without addressing the individual first. 

It’s not that the scripture is not designed to do this – obviously, it is. But we want to target lifestyle/psychological issues, specifically – with reference to the scripture. We kicked this format off last Saturday, with John introducing us to his approach to mental health with reference to Vedanta, as well as talking about dispassion in more general terms. This was followed on Sunday with my talk addressing guna management, qualifications and values.  Both sessions were very productive, with excellent audience participation and feedback. 

However, we decided that holding two separate online seminars every week is too much – it will lead to saturation, and possibly, poor attendance.  What we have settled on is alternating the two approaches. We will do so on Sundays, at the usual time. One week we will hold more technical scripture based satsangs, and the next, more lifestyle/psychologically oriented satsangs.

This coming Sunday, we will once again focus on psychological issues, and the topic will be ‘Personal Relationships’. In this session, all the Shiningworld teachers have been invited to join in, though not all can make it this week. The idea is that this will be a collaborative effort. We also encourage anyone who has a question or a contribution to make, to do so as well. We believe that collectively we can offer many valuable insights that will benefit everyone.

Dear Friends,

James and I arrived safely in New York on Sunday 31^stDecember, and celebrated the New Year with Dave. We wasted no time in getting James the medical attention he urgently needed the next day. Thankfully, Dave helped us to expedite the process, and James was admitted to emergency care almost immediately. He had an angiogram and two stents put in on Wednesday and was discharged by the end of the week.  He is doing very well and is his usual cheerful optimistic Self!  We thank all of you who sent such wonderful messages of love and support, bless you.

Thank you all for joining us for our last Sunday satsang.  We are happy to have such a faithful group of inquirers regularly attending our Sunday Zoom sessions. We particularly appreciated the feedback we got from everyone regarding how Self-knowledge has transformed your lives, though we were not after testimonials as such. What we are interested in as Vedanta teachers is how the teachings are working for you, and how we can best facilitate your inquiry..

We did not hear from anyone for whom the teachings are not working, and we know some of you are struggling to implement the teachings in your lives. We encourage all of you to give us feedback on what you need from us, what teachings you would like emphasized, where you are stuck. As our Sunday Satsang are not structured lessons, we can tailor them to  suit your needs.

Unless Isvara presents us with a different teaching, Ramji will start the session next Sunday by unfolding the meditation verses of Atma Bodh, which delivers Self-knowledge in beautiful metaphors.

We are both happy to be back from our travels, the cat is fat, the fox is foxy, and the garden looks lovely! We are both recovering from nasty chest infections, but otherwise doing well and happy to be home.

Join us on Sunday 26^th as James completes the teaching on the Dancing Shiva, and I will briefly unfold the importance of the difference between the Cause and Effect and the Non-Origination teaching.

This weekend I will teach Yoga and Vedanta in Bayreuth. As you probably know Yoga and Vedanta is not the same but it is also not different. How exactly is it not the same, and how is it not different? Here’s a little excerpt from my book on Patanjali Yoga Sutras, called the “Power of Know”:

Vedanta is much more than intellectual concepts that give us the inspiration to cope with life.  It is living non-duality. Inspiration, without action, wears off, keeping seekers seeking, whereas Vedanta is a blueprint for joyous transformational living.  It is difficult to let go of seeking because, despite its downsides, it is often a comforting identity, a security blanket of sorts.  When you understand the value of Vedanta, the dream of seeking stops and your real waking life begins.
